Laphroaig was founded by Alexander and Donald Johnston in 1815 and doubled its production capacity in 1924. Elizabeth “Bessie” Williamson directed the distillery from 1954 to 1972, during which time three new stills were installed. Today, it is owned by Suntory Global Spirits. This truly magnificent bottling is especially sunny, revealing one after the other all the flavour and aroma elements that make Laphroaig a single malt like no other. Laphroaig fans will particularly appreciate its retro-nasal olfaction steeped in smoke rings from a Havana cigar wafting through a coastal scene.

Tasting Notes:

Nose: subtle yet powerful. The aroma palette reveals vegetal notes (agave, malted barley), lemon, salt, the mandatory empyreumatic character (sleet, fuel oil), earth, root aromas (gentian) and peat, gradually becoming floral (lily of the valley, lily, white lilac). When allowed to breathe, mineral fragrances of slate and tarmac fill the air.

Palate: rich, dynamic. A now richer peat first glimpsed on the nose takes centre stage. Quickly, however, lavender honey, fresh walnut and dark chocolate appear by its side. Like the nose, the palate then becomes increasingly empyreumatic and ashy.

Finish: Long, distinguished. Revealing fermentation notes (cooked barley, peated mash), the finish takes us to breathe in lungfuls of salty, marine air. Under bright rays of sunshine, we are then invited to scale the heights of a limestone cliff.
