Founded in 1798 by David Robertson, Highland Park was a hub of illegal distillation until it received its official license in 1826. It doubled its production capacity in 1898, increasing the number of stills at the site from two to four, and has been owned by the Edrington Group since 1999. In his Guide to Whisky, Michael Jackson described Highland Park as “the greatest all-rounder in the world of malt whisky”. Discovering this timeless bottling, one can only agree. Like a very old Jura vin jaune, it reveals a stylishly old school character, digging out childhood memories buried deep within our memory.

Tasting Notes:

Nose: rich, distinguished. The tropical and oxidative aroma palette (macerated fruit, balsamic vinegar) brings immediate joy. Allowed to breathe, fleur de sel, blossoming lime tree, lime, guava, beeswax, curry and rice cake fill every inch of the air.

Palate: full, dense. Candied (palette, walnut, Mirabelle plum), creamy (flan) and yet tan flavour palettegy (grapefruit, lemon), the reveals an incredibly delicate texture (rice grain, grated ginger). These flavours then develop a tropical dimension (ripe banana), with resin (pine, cedar) and herbaceous notes (pipe tobacco).

Finish: long, well-rounded. The deeply serene finish reveals more rustic (meadow, dandelion), earthy, root (gentian) and almost peaty tones. Lavender and heather honeys gradually spread across the sides of the palate. The empty glass is unmistakably dominated by peat and camphor.
